Lots of stairs…

So, what’s that image in the header all about?

Well, as I have mentioned previously, we did a couple of weeks in Hungary last year, with lots of it spent in Budapest. One of the many architecturally amazing things in that city is the Basilica of St. Istvan (Istvan, pronounced “Isht-van”, is the Hungarian analog of Steven). I’m fiercly areligious, but the building is still damn impressive, even without the divine connection.

Anyway, in addition to looking around the chapel, etc, you can pay a nominal fee (I think it was the equivalent of about $1.40 Canadian) to be able to go up into the main dome, and look inside it, and then go out onto a deck and look over the city from atop the cathedral. They basically force you to take an elevator (two elevators in series, actually) up to the top–I assume the stairs present an insurance risk, but you can come down the stairs, although it appears to be discouraged.

So this is a look down the spiral staircase inside that basilica. There are a lot of stairs.

So, it’s a cool image that I can use without ripping anyone off, since it’s my own photo.

Updated: When I changed the templates that pic didn’t make sense as a header any more (I’m using a bust of Terance now), but here’s the image in case you were wondering…

[...] This is a photo I took of a staircase inside St. Istvan’s Basilica in Budapest. I used a variant of this shot as the header of the blog in an early incarnation. This one is an 8 x 10 print that I have matted with black velvet, which creates a great “blacker than black” border effect. I am inordinately proud of how this picture turned out. [...]
