Sunday Night

On Sunday night I was invited to join the aforementioned comic creators, the people from Strange Adventures who had worked the booth, and Toronto comic scene Svengali Christopher Butcher, for dinner at the Economy Shoe Shop.

Much fun was had by all, and after we had all eaten (and drank) on Cal‘s tab, several of us ended up visiting a couple of Halifax drinking institutions.

Most of the what happened during the night, while harmless, can not be revealed here due to a 2:30AM pledge extracted from me by one of the participants. 🙂

The dinner was fun though, as was most of the drinking. I was gratified to hear that the creators had a good time, and enjoyed the show–most seemed keen to come back out here, which is always a good thing.

A few things I can reveal without causing any trouble:

  • Apparently Mark Oakley moved to Wolfville a few years after I moved to Halifax. I was kind of suprised to hear this, since he was such a “Toronto” guy in my mind.
  • I am too old to go to the LiquorDome.
  • Apparently I passed the test for attending Chris Butcher‘s wedding. Sadly, I am actually going to have to be in Boston that weekend, but I will be missing a hell of a party.
  • Joey Comeau did not kill all those hookers. I think this means that Drake did it.
  • Die Hard 2 is clearly superior to Die Hard 3
  • You can stay at Mike Allred’s house for four days, and not have any idea he’s a Mormon. That’s the kind of religious person I get along with.
  • Scott Chantler can not remember names, at all. He can, however, remember obscure details of your life history. He was also once kidnapped in a mini-van.
  • At one point conversation bounced off Morrison’s Doom Patrol (mostly we avoided comics talk), and Adrian Alphona revealed that he doesn’t really read comics. “I spend more time reading fashion magazines.” I note that Adrian’s characters look like human beings, do not have costumes, and regularly change their clothes. Apparently more comic artists–especially the superhero guys–should read fashion magazines.
  • Eric Kim is a great guy. He can quote Shakespeare, and Bruce Willis dialogue. There are absolutely no stories about him.
  • Ryan North has go-go-gadget arms, and is just wrong about Die Hard 3. I have a theory that he might have done a lot of the driving yesterday when the Carload of Canadian Cartoonists made the journey back to Toronto, since he was probably the least damaged in the morning.
  • Brian McLachlan apparently sold out of books at the show, selling more than he did at TCAF (go Halifax!). He also invented a drink called “Nitrogin” which is a combination of Jolt Cola and gin. And he drank it. On purpose.
  • When you feel a cold coming on, the most sensible thing to do is go out drinking until 3AM on a “work night”. Clearly that will leave you feeling refreshed and healthy when you roll into your early meeting on Monday morning. Feh.

In the end I think a good night was had by all–I certainly had fun. I guess I’m going to have to do TCAF next year.

(This post brought to you by my gratitude for my wife letting me sleep in Monday morning, it was a kindness beyond measure.)
