Beer Exploration
Presenting the top five beers I want to try, but as yet have been unable to secure tasting samples of:
- Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout from North Coast Brewing
- Goose Island Oatmeal Stout from Goose Island Beer Company (and I wouldn’t turn up my nose at a chance to try their Bourbon County Stout either!)
- Cadillac Mtn. Stout from the Bar Harbor Brewing Company
- Gonzo Imperial Porter from Flying Dog Brewery (previously mentioned here)
- World Wide Stout from Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales (previously mentioned here)
I’m thinking that at this point it would be easier to just grab Ralph and go on a two-week beer tour, making extensive use of BeerMapping.com, than to try to find a way to get these beers to me. I mean, if the mountain won’t come to Mohammed…

Having lived in Chicago, including dining at a Goose Island Brew Pub, I can vouch for the quality of the Oatmeal Stout. I don’t remember the Bourbon County Stout, however.

Oh sure, make me beer jealous.
I’m not even sure where to go next time I’m in or around Chicago, since the Chicago Beer Map lists three different Goose Island sites.

If you want to go to a Goose Island location, you will be wanting to go to the Clybourn Avenue Location. The Wrigleyville location, while nicely located if you are headed to a game, is not really as beer centered as the original location on Clybourn Ave. The Brewery itself on West Fulton Street is an industrial brewery that is not really open for tours unless you have connections.
I’ve tried all the beers on the list except for the Cadillac Mountain Stout and they are all solid beers. I would place the Bourbon County, World Wide Stout and Old Rasputin as my favorites on this particular list.

Thanks for the info, and the confirmation that these are worth seeking out!

[...] tried the regular version of Old Rasputin a couple of years back–after looking for it for around a year–and quite liked it. I’ve picked up a box of it now and again in the intervening years [...]
