Buy me HST Beer
It has been brought to my attention that Flying Dog, a brewery in Colorado (not a bar in Waterloo!) is making a Hunter S. Thompson Gonzo Tribute Beer
Gonzo Imperial Porter will be released in early June in a unique Gonzo illustrated four pack. A limited edition, 750ml bottle will also be available from the brewery’s tasting room - the first 100 of these will be signed by Ralph Steadman.
Like Hunter this beer is deep and complex. Gonzo Imperial Porter has been brewed with black, chocolate and crystal malts, and hopped with Millennium and Cascades. This is a turbo charged version of the Road Dog and at 9.5% ABV it will bite you in the ass if you don’t show it the proper respect.
Now, I like a nice chewy dark beer–given my druthers I will order a stout or a porter over pretty much any other type of beer–but I’ve rarely seen one that ran to 9.5% booze. That’d be like the flying canoe beer of porters. (Although, of course, it wouldn’t compare booze-wise to that other beer that I haven’t had a change to try.)
If only there was a way for me to get a few bottles of this… Sadly, I doubt that the NSLC will stock it. The shipping option that Flying Dog offers would cost upwards of $100US to ship me 6 bottles, so that’s right out. I wonder if it will still be around when WFC happens.
I might have to schedule a trip to Boston soon.

Cool! A beer dedicated to the Hubble Space Telescope! That’s….oh…nevermind.

One of the guys at my poker game thought it was a reference to the Harmonized Sales Tax. (In NS we don’t pay PST and GST, there is just one flat tax collected that covers both, which shows up on receipts as HST.)
What’s wrong with the kids today? Don’t they ever see bats?
