I have a wireless Linux box

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

I am writing this post in a Firefox window on my newly installed Ubuntu Linux machine.
I had a relatively old IBM Thinkpad A21m sitting around, more-or-less unused, so I decided to test the rumours I’ve been hearing that Ubuntu is now at the “easy one step install and it just works” stage.
Bear in mind that [...]

Art / Artist (continued)

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

I just want to quickly point out that there is some new stuff happening in the comments to my “Confusing The Art and the Artist” post, the “most linked to” post here so far. In particular, look for the lengthy response from John C. Wright, one of my examples in the post. His response is [...]

Tweaking up the blog

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

The keen-eyed among you (who aren’t reading this in RSS) may have noticed a few tweaks in the blog presentation. I’ve added numbering to the comments, and I’ve written a tiny plugin and made some changes to support distinguishing my comments from the ones the rest of you make. (With the amount of comments I [...]

Getting spammed, almost to the DDOS point.

Tuesday, May 30th, 2006

In the last eight hours, there have been 2404 attempts to post spam comments to this blog. Ooops, 2407. The count keeps going up, with between three and ten attempts per minute, sustained over the last eight hours. It looks like they are all generated from the same script, running on several machines.
Of course my [...]

I love visualization

Sunday, May 28th, 2006

This is a representation of this web page:

The legend is as follows:
blue: for links (the A tag)
red: for tables (TABLE, TR and TD tags)
green: for the DIV tag
violet: for images (the IMG tag)
yellow: for forms (FORM, INPUT, TEXTAREA, SELECT and OPTION tags)
orange: for linebreaks and blockquotes (BR, P, and BLOCKQUOTE tags)
black: the HTML tag, the [...]

Minor sidebar work

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

I’ve added random quote functionality to the sidebar, and so far I’ve just fed in something like 30 choice Bertrand Russell quotes. I haven’t decided yet whether or not I intend to add other authors, or just keep deepening the Russell quote collection. You’ll see it at the top of the sidebar.
You will also see [...]

Footdragging time over: WP2.0.1

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

OK, I finally bit the bullet and did the upgrade from WP1.5.3 to WP2.0.1 (It feels like I just did the upgrade to WP1.5, but it looks like that was almost exactly a year ago.)
Everything seems to have gone smoothly, although I had to update a few of my plugins to make them happy. Also, [...]

A short pause

Tuesday, January 17th, 2006

There may be a short break in service over the next week as I am about to enter a period of intense time commitment at work–I’m preparing materials to teach a whole team of new developers about our product, which has a pretty huge history and codebase, and then I’m teaching them.
I really hate when [...]

What content?

Wednesday, October 26th, 2005

OK, Boston-ness is getting in the way of content. However, in line with the whole “a year has passed thing”, I’ve set up a date reminder system in my sidebar. If you’re not reading this in RSS, you will see the next 5 upcoming things from my date list just under the calendar.
Now, I need [...]

October 26.
One year since my first post here.
322 posts in that year.
Still enjoying it.
