Father’s Day

Warning: this will be a Sappy Dad™ post.

I woke up this morning to a smiling three year old face. I was wished a Happy Father’s Day, and handed this:

Father's Day card

I was unsurprised by the signature, as I have seen Sarah working on writing her name quite a few times now. I was pretty shocked by the rest of it.

I later found out that Trish told Sarah to come and write her name on the card, and then was about to put the card into the envelope when Sarah said “Can you show me how to write ‘I love you Daddy’?”. At which point they spent some time working on it until Sarah was ready to put it in the card.

I’ve been handed a lot of pieces of paper that have made me proud over the years: diplomas, degrees, certificates, letters of thanks from a head of state, outstanding performance reviews, etc. Many of them made me feel very good, but none of them touches this.

Mate, tell me about it - my card this year from my four-year old was a drawing of me as a a stick figure. I asked where my hands were and he said “they are in your pockets” - pointing to the stick arms which stopped just by the top of the stick legs. I was chocked up for a few minutes. Here’s to another good year of being a Dad!

    cheers, Ben
