I blame Linda Medley
Anyone got a spare $3,000,000 (Canadian) kicking around?
See, I spent a lot of time tonight shopping for castles. It’s not insane–I need more shelf space for my books, and nothing says “lots of shelf space” like a nice castle; especially a castle with a tower.
While I was doing that, I ran across this lovely manor house in Ireland. It’s only eleven years old, so you avoid most of the traditional castle problems–I certainly wouldn’t be fighting with the locals about painting my castle pink–and it’s near Galway, so I could have Paddy Flynn1 over for a pint. Also, we did like the West best on our tour of Ireland, and we’d be only a short drive from where my grandfather was born.
So, I just need to come up with the cash.
Oh, and convince Trish to move to Ireland. That might be even harder than coming up with the cash.
Oh, and come up with a good philosophical argument for why it’s not ridiculous to spend that much on a house, so I can discuss it with Will. That might be the hardest part. Heh.

Hey, you get a castle, you get your choice of two outs:
1. It’s a castle!
2. How many people will be living in your castle? Your people-per-square-foot in a traditional castle could work out much better than the two-self-obsessed-dweebs-in-a-McMansion ratio.

Well, in order to convince Trish to move to Ireland, I’d probably have to move her parents with us. So that’s five to start, before any staff or other people living there. We’d have to move in a lot more to get the square-foot/person ratio down to something sensible on a 10,000 sq foot house though. Of course, if I’m assuming I can afford a $3m house, I can probably safely assume that I can afford some permanent staff. And maybe I can fund an artist’s retreat on a six-month basis in one wing or something…
I’m a pretty good rationalizer, when I need to be. Of course, I still need to round up that $3m to get started…
