A few more

You know, a lot of the pictures that I have scattered in various folders across my hard drives seem to be pictures of women. I wonder how that happened.

Mick and Al

Here’s one from a decade ago or so, where you see my roommate Sarah (a.k.a. “Mick”), wearing the very same hat that Keith McPhee was wearing at our poker game a few weeks ago, and my old pal Allison (who is also probably a PhD by now) reclining on that horrible life-sucking couch. I do miss that house a little bit, although I am very, very happy not to have to put up with the noise of the student ghetto every night.

Emma and Lorraine

Here’s another of approximately the same vintage. Here we see the lovely and talented Emma Bull, and the frankly fabulous Lorraine Garland. This was a concert/birthday party as I recall (tiara on the birthday girl, of course), but it shall forever be marked in my memory as The Night Of The Two Tubas. “Two tubas, aye, two tubas are magic.”

(As an aside, I’ve got another shot from that night showing Will looking very hairy. He doesn’t get his picture posted though since A) Emma is much better looking, and B) I seem to recall him getting me into trouble that night by starting a “let’s make fun of Scientology” discussion with me, while we were sitting at a table with someone he knew to be a Scientologist. I didn’t know this person was a Scientologist, and I was staying at their house that night, and the fact that I went after old L. Ron with both barrels did later make things a little sticky for me. Pretty funny in retrospect, though.)

Oh, and I have to post this one:

Punchline

I know how it looks, but this photo is the punchline to a complicated story about me being a completely gormless dunderhead. It’s a funny story, and I’ll tell it to you sometime–it makes me look like an idiot, but I tell it well, I think.

Damn! Now, I’m sure I didn’t set up you up deliberately, ’cause I tend to pity rather than dislike Scientologists. But it is quite likely that I talked about things that made the Scientologist uncomfortable, ’cause, y’know, they’ve got a history that goes pop when you prick it and I believe that if you claim a faith that has a past, you should be able to defend it. But I am sorry you weren’t operating with full information, and for that, I apologize, even if I was extremely drunk at the time and you shouldn’t have expected civil behavior from me.

Oh, I’m mostly teasing you, Will. You may have thought that I knew she was a Scientologist, and that I was playing along with you. You certainly had a mischevious grin, so you knew you were stirring her up, and you may have thought I was helping with the teasing. (I assume you know who I’m talking about.)

Anyway, I managed to stay on her good side over the years–so I could continue to be a guest in her home, and she only tried to convert me once, and was remarkably civil about letting it drop immediately when I, very politely, made it clear that I thought that stuff was nonsense.

However, since you were so gracious and apologized when it wasn’t needed…

    Hairy Will

Man, those northern winters are hard!

And if this was shot at the time of the discussion, I would vote for “at least a little drunk.”
