Disappointed
Sigh. I finally got around to reading the Edge of Reason last night.
Despite the fact that lots of people on the Internets seem to think this was the wonderful book I was expecting, it just didn’t work for me. The plot was kind of interesting, but the rest of the craft just wasn’t there.
The only review I could find that I agreed with was Paul Witcover’s. (As an aside, I really enjoyed this and this, so maybe it’s not surprising we agree here).
Now I’m really afraid to go back and read those books I liked when I was a teen.
Let’s hope Disch lives up to my expectations.

Based on your enjoyment of the Wild Cards stuff I can see how The Edge of Reason would be disappointing. In hindsight I could have been a bit more critical than I was, other than a vague mention of “Old Ones” I was thoroughly disappointed by the lack of Lovecraftian elements in the novel; which was my main reason for picking up the novel. It certainly lacks the sense of play and fun that the Wild Cards stories had, and in truth it takes itself a bit too seriously.
