I could wake up to that

While I maintain that the ne plus ultra1 form of Wodehouse’s Jeeves & Wooster stories are the Jonathan Cecil unabridged readings from Audio Partners, the voice I hear in my mind when I think of Jeeves speaking is Stephen Fry’s. Certainly he’s created a visual icon:

Stephen Fry as Jeeves

That’s why I think the notion of the VOCO clock, a clock that awakes you with Fry’s voice speaking one of fifty or so different Jeevesian lines is terribly amusing. (Of course I also think Fry being involved in something so obviously crass and commercial is kind of funny in its own right–it does rather clash with his image.)

Your horoscope is promising very considerable profit and equal quantities of pleasure. Unlikely as this may currently appear, the world merely requires your presence for the process to begin.

I think I’d rather wake up to that than to Don Connolly, yup. (If you click through to the site, you can hear several samples, including the one quoted above.)

The clock in question

  1. Yes, I think I am prepared to make a case that these audiobooks are “better” in some sense than the printed form. It’s a very rare argument.(back)
