And now from the “huh I didn’t know that” file…

So, you’ve heard about this “Last King Of Scotland” movie?

I was doing a little reading on it today, which lead me to discover that Idi Amin named four of his sons McKenzie, Campbell, Mackintosh, and McLaren–but he had something like 45 kids, so maybe he was just short of names. Apparently he often wore a kilt.

Something new everyday, I tell ya…

No “MacFarlane” though, which is a shame because he really could have only enhanced the legacy of my ancestors.

Speaking of learning something every day:

For much of their history, the MacFarlanes were a very turbulent lot. Their rallying cry, “Loch Sloy”, signalled many a night raid to “collect” cattle from their richer neighbors to the south and east. Their march-piobaireachd “Thogail nam Bo theid sinn” (To Lift the Cows We Shall Go) gives ample notice of intent. They were so competent that the full moon was known as “MacFarlane’s Lantern”.

That “MarFarlane’s Lantern” thing is genius. (Piobaireachd, by the way, means “bagpipe music”, so a march-piobaireachd is just a marching tune.)

I also see that the ancestral lands border Loch Lomond. I forsee a version of the song on an upcoming poker mix.

I’m sure I told you the story of MacFarlane’s Lantern at some point during some cards. It’s how I get all my nocturnal power, afterall.
