Minor Victory
I’d like to think my call and email were the straws the broke the camel’s back. Because it’s not enough for my ego for me to be part of a success (no matter how minor or temporary), I have to be pivotal to it!
Michael Geist - Canadian DMCA Introduction Delayed
The word this afternoon is that Industry Minister Jim Prentice will not introduce the Canadian DMCA tomorrow. The thousands of letters and phone calls over the past week have urged the government to adopt balanced copyright reforms that meets everyone’s needs and does not unduly harm education, consumer rights, privacy, and free speech. The delay provides an exceptional opportunity for Minister Prentice to consult more broadly and to factor those concerns into the forthcoming bill in the interests of all Canadians.

Don’t encourage my ego, Will.
It’s already out of control.
Still, I believe I will have a celebratory beer tonight.

Sorry Chris, I am sure your message and call helped, but I am positive it was my phone call and spectacularly well crafted e-mail which made the difference. I think I will use my new found powers of government persuasion to eliminate taxes and build myself a castle with budget surpluses.
On a more serious note, I found it interesting that of the 5 e-mails I sent to various politicians (thanks to the suggestions in the “What You Can Do” article by Geist), I only got a response from my local MPP and the PM’s office.
The local MPP passed the buck (since it is a federal issue), but said he would keep the references I sent him in case he was involved in any conversations at the provincial level.
The PM’s office forwarded my message to minister Prentice.
Both responses were from assistants and were non-form letter format, which was nice.
I never got a response from of the others, including my local MP. I will remember that the next time there is an election Mr. Steckle.

Well, I’ll let you take the credit, since it appears that Prentice has changed his mind back.
Let’s try a little harder this time.
I am also unthrilled with the response from my MP–but he’s been wrong on this issue before, and I’m sure he has a “crank” file with my name on it.
