Things I Have Learned Today

1) The best tool for cutting carpet is actually the “sheepsfoot” serrated blade on a Leatherman Charge xTi. No need to buy a special blade.

2) A quite good tool for getting tackstrip off the floor is actually a decent quality butterknife. The flexibility and thin edge of the blade make it easier to get the blade under the strip than with a prybar, and the flexibility also helps pop the strip up. I think the one I used today cost me 25 cents when I was a student.

3) The dump does not take carpet or underlay–apparently those have to go to a special “construction” dump. That place, of course, is not open during any useful hours, particularly the time when I was driving around with a load of carpet packed into the back of the car.

4) Apparently, quite by accident, the new flooring we’re putting in on Monday will qualify for a tax rebate. That’s wasted stimulus money, since we were doing the work anyway. (Not that I won’t take it.)
