Fall notes

  • I have travelled over 2000km so far this week. The vast majority of this has been on more or less empty highways, driving through absolutely resplendent fall colours, mostly on routes that parallel rivers. To put this in the simplest possible terms, this has been one hell of a powerful nature toke.
  • I know I resisted Apple for the longest time, but man am I happy with the iPod for road trips. I drove an 18 hour segement on Sunday and barely used half a charge (at least according to the power meter). I would have been impressed with 12 hours of uninterrupted functioning, since I had a car charger with me, but it soldiered on for the entire session and said it was ready to keep going well after. I admit I was wrong.
  • Speaking of the iPod, I should mention that I spent a decent portion of this week’s driving listening to BBC radio plays of various types. BBC play always shock me since there are often actors who I recognize from their other work. While it’s not a terrible stretch to hear Joanna Lumley as the gold-digging secretary who marries the rich genius, it is pretty weird to hear the fifth Doctor (or Dangerous Davies, or Albert Campion, as you prefer) being a histopathologist who loves his work just a little too much. The CBC should do more full-cast dramas.
  • I thought it was late enough in the year to take the sting out of the old “two seasons: roadwork and snowed-in” joke. I was wrong. On the other hand, it’s kind of cool to see cliffs being blasted back to accomodate a new passing lane, or something. Explosions going off (albeit under blast mats) within feet of your car are pretty excellent.
