Well, after five years with my previous ISP, they finally pissed me off enough to overcome my basic intertia, and I switched over to Bluehost this weekend.
If you’re seeing this message, then you’re already seeing my site on Bluehost. I also moved a couple of other sites, and a couple of mailing lists I run.
To make a long story short, the Bluehost system is much nicer than what I had before, and is less than a quarter of the cost. In fact, it seems too good to be true–I’m kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Now I just have to find all the things that didn’t work exactly right in the move. For instance, it is important to pick the right code page when doing the import of the SQL that brings in all the old comments and posts, etc, from the previous site. Getting a really wrong answer is kind of OK, since everything is terribly messed up and you know you have to fix it. Much more worrying is getting it slightly wrong, so that only a few punctuation characters are messed up, since it might take you a while to notice that.
I am actually in some terror of an image or something getting lost in the move, and my not noticing until after my account expires at my old ISP.
