Top 5: First Blush

So, the question is “Ever get nostalgic for those first few blissful moments of being infatuated with someone? What are your top 5 songs for beginning a relationship, or looking back fondly thereon?”

Let’s see…

The first thing that pops into my head is the Oysterband tune “The Drunkard’s Waltz“. It’s the wild (and maybe just a little self-destructive) crazy love. “And I’ll swing from those stars and you’ll run through the trees / Like Venus in April with mud on your knees “ (full lyrics). The tune is actually a Rev Hammer song, but the Oysters do a better version. I did buy that Rev Hammer album, though, just to see how the original compared.

And then there’s “Just A Big Kid (Over You)“, by Jerry Jerry and the Sons Of Rhythm Orche$tra. Damn I wish Jerry was still touring. “Something wrong with this? I don’t see how there possibly could be / The waterbed’s on fire, but everything else is as it should be.” (Remind me sometime to write that long post about how Jerry Jerry changed my life.)

Then there’s the one track that would be on both my list, and my Mom’s list: “Ain’t That A Kick In The Head“, performed by Dino. My Mom had a pretty unhealthy crush on him back in the day. “My head keeps spinnin’ / I go to sleep and keep grinnin’ / If this in just the beginin’ / My life is gonna be beee-yoo-ti-ful”.

From there you’d have to go to Danny Michel‘s track “Perfect“. It captures that nigh-obsessive way you keep you constantly thinking about the person as you float through things–going back to that perfect moment that you just want to freeze-frame. It’s even better live–I’ve seen about a zillion live bands, and I can firmly state that Danny is the best live performer I’ve ever seen. “Nobody move. This is perfect. It’s just like you.”

And then I guess I’d close out with an old Stan Rogers tune “Forty-Five Years“. I really love that song. (Stan Rogers is at least partly responsible for my moving to Halifax, you know.)

Where the earth shows its bones of wind-broken stone
And the sea and the sky are one
I’m caught out of time, my blood sings with wine
And I’m running naked in the sun
There’s God in the trees, I’m weak in the knees
And the sky is a painful blue
I’d like to look around, but Honey, all I see is you.

What songs pop into your head?
