Hump Of Hate: Church & State

What could possibly be worse than the alignment of highly conservative political factions with fundamentalist Christianity?

Xemu knows the answer to that question.

As an aside, also from my Hump of Hate, even ignoring who this award was given to, doesn’t this sentence from the article encapsulate so much that is hate-worthy about North American society?

Members of the group […] were given a “Points of Light Award” as Hurricane Heroes.

A “Points of Light Award”? I’m sorry, when the name of the award is so silly that even MSNBC journalists have to put it it in scare quotes to keep a straight face, you know something is wrong. (Apparently they had no trouble treating “Hurricane Heroes” as a proper noun…)

Look, if something is worth getting an award, it has to mean something. And no award that has to be scare quoted is going to meet that criteria. Either you are giving a meaningless award, and diluting the whole idea of a service award, or you are insulting someone deserving of a meaningful award with that kind of cutesy name and presentation.

You know what a real award is? Something like the Victoria Cross. And you don’t get that unless you goddamned well deserve it.
