{"id":876,"date":"2007-04-24T01:00:22","date_gmt":"2007-04-24T05:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/24\/a-pick-me-up\/"},"modified":"2009-02-28T00:08:19","modified_gmt":"2009-02-28T04:08:19","slug":"a-pick-me-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2007\/04\/24\/a-pick-me-up\/","title":{"rendered":"A pick me up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m back in Boston for week three of &#8220;Don&#8217;t-see-my-family-April&#8221;, and today work got me incredibly down.<\/p>\n<p>However, as it is (or, as midnight just clicked over, was) <strong>International Pixel-Stained Peasant Day<\/strong>, I have lots of free fun stuff to read and cheer me tonight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/wp-content\/images\/2007\/04\/ipstpd1.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Banner\" title=\"Banner\" class=\"aligncenter\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t know what I&#8217;m talking about you need to first see <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/sfwa\/10039.html\">this<\/a>, then read a couple of responses (like <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/sfwa\/11289.html\">this<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nihilistic-kid.livejournal.com\/945926.html\">this<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/kristine-smith.livejournal.com\/361403.html\">this<\/a>), and then see how it lead to <a href=\"http:\/\/papersky.livejournal.com\/318273.html\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you not clicking through the links, what it amounts to is a whole bunch of tech-hip authors posting (or linking to) their writing on the web for free.<\/p>\n<p>You can hear three outspoken author types chat about this in an MP3 capture of a panel discussion <a href=\"http:\/\/timetravelershow.com\/2007\/04\/23\/show-notes-stross-scalzi-and-buckell-on-pixel-stained-technopeasant-day\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a list of some of them, but not all of them, <a href=\"http:\/\/papersky.livejournal.com\/320114.html\">here<\/a>. Or you can peruse <a href=\"http:\/\/community.livejournal.com\/ipstp\/\">the thing that arose here<\/a> (what&#8217;s the term for a mutli-user flashmob blog?) for lots more links.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some that I would recommend, in no particular order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/14theditch.livejournal.com\/111871.html\">Weiroot<\/a>, a character piece, by Jeffrey Ford, probably my favourite living short story writer, and one my favourite novelists too!<\/li>\n<li>The kids (a.k.a. Gavin and\/or Kelly) over at the LCRW\/Small Beer collective have posted <a href=\"http:\/\/lcrw.net\/wordpress\/?p=182\">a veritable cornucopia of wonderful free stuff<\/a>, notably including Kelly&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/lcrw.net\/fictionplus\/link-handbag.htm\">The Faery Handbag<\/a>, and Richard Butner&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/lcrw.net\/fictionplus\/otheragents.htm\">Other Agents<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthawells.com\/element.htm\">The Element of Fire<\/a>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marthawells.com\/\">Martha Wells<\/a>. A whole novel, and one I liked. I&#8217;ve spoken of Wells here before.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/subterraneanpress.com\/index.php\/magazine\/spring2007\/fiction-missile-gap-by-charles-stross\/\">Missile Gap,<\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antipope.org\/charlie\/blog-static\/2007\/04\/missile_gap.html\">Charles Stross<\/a>. A whole novella, and one I&#8217;m getting to read online before my paper copy gets here, since <a href=\"http:\/\/subterraneanpress.com\/index.php\/2007\/04\/25\/charles-de-lint-old-man-crow-various-lettered-editions-shipping\/\">they just shipped this week<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Novelist, nigh-governor, and road-trip planner extraordinaire Will Shetterly has a <a href=\"http:\/\/shetterly.blogspot.com\/2007\/04\/hurrah-for-international-pixel-stained.html\">page linking to several of his stories, as well as a complete 159-page comic<\/a> free online.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jlake.com\/\">Jay Lake<\/a> brings us <a href=\"http:\/\/jaylake.livejournal.com\/1061481.html\">Glass: A Love Story<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Novelist, singer, songwriter, and caffeine-addict <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emma_Bull\">Emma Bull<\/a> promises a week of free stuff, starting with <a href=\"http:\/\/coffeeem.livejournal.com\/34673.html\">lyrics<\/a> to her contribution to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omnisonicmusic.com\/\">Chris Ewen<\/a> project.<\/li>\n<li>Acclaimed and outspoken Aussie YA novelist, and academic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.justinelarbalestier.com\/blog\/\">Justine Larbalestier<\/a> gives us <a href=\"http:\/\/justinelarbalestier.com\/blog\/?p=625\">a three chapter tease of an upcoming work<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottwesterfeld.com\/blog\">Her husband<\/a> also posts <a href=\"http:\/\/scottwesterfeld.com\/blog\/?p=214\">some mysterious stuff from his dark past<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Another Aussie, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephendedman.com\/\">Stephen Dedman<\/a>, brings us <a href=\"http:\/\/stephen-dedman.livejournal.com\/120905.html\">a very short short<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>My pal <a href=\"http:\/\/gwendabond.typepad.com\/bondgirl\/\">Gwenda Bond<\/a>, once known in her wilder days as &#8220;Apocalypse Barbie&#8221;, has a <a href=\"http:\/\/gwendabond.typepad.com\/bondgirl\/2007\/04\/international_p.html\">YA story about spirit animals<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarahmonette.com\/\">Sarah Monette<\/a> brings us <a href=\"http:\/\/truepenny.livejournal.com\/505221.html\">The Watcher In The Corners<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s lots more good stuff I haven&#8217;t seen yet, but it was quite a welcome flood today, that&#8217;s for sure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I&#8217;m back in Boston for week three of &#8220;Don&#8217;t-see-my-family-April&#8221;, and today work got me incredibly down.
