{"id":81,"date":"2004-12-09T23:59:05","date_gmt":"2004-12-10T03:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/archives\/2004\/12\/09\/should-i-laugh-or-cry\/"},"modified":"2004-12-10T00:42:51","modified_gmt":"2004-12-10T04:42:51","slug":"should-i-laugh-or-cry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2004\/12\/09\/should-i-laugh-or-cry\/","title":{"rendered":"Should I laugh or cry?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to the Times, in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/article\/0%2C%2C2-1393306%2C00.html\">article<\/a> I saw on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.locusmag.com\/index.html\">Locus<\/a>, it doesn&#8217;t bother Pullman, who seems to be taking the Alan Moore philosophical approach to what Hollywood is doing to his books, but I don&#8217;t know whether to laugh or to cry&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nTHE Hollywood adaptation of Philip Pullman&#8217;s trilogy His Dark Materials, in which two children do battle with an evil, all-powerful church, is being rewritten to remove anti-religious overtones.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I find it interesting that the article refers to the &#8220;perceived anti-religiosity&#8221; of the books. This is kind of like talking about the &#8220;perceived anti-Bush&#8221; stance of Fahrenheit 911. I mean these are books where the Church is <span style=\"color:white\">killing children by forcibly slicing out their souls<\/span>, and wherein the heros actually <span style=\"color:white\">kill God<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>On the upside, if the parents see the movie, and buy the books for their kids, then I guess that&#8217;s a good thing.<\/p>\n<p>On yet another hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/bondgirl.blogspot.com\/2004\/12\/yes-well-be-seeing-it.html\">Gwenda points out<\/a> that Daniel Handler is apparently happy with the Unfortunate Events movie.
