{"id":681,"date":"2006-09-22T23:57:44","date_gmt":"2006-09-23T03:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/09\/22\/the-good-thing-thats-happening-this-weekend\/"},"modified":"2006-09-22T23:57:44","modified_gmt":"2006-09-23T03:57:44","slug":"the-good-thing-thats-happening-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2006\/09\/22\/the-good-thing-thats-happening-this-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"The good thing that&#8217;s happening this weekend&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After the old men are done their rocking, Sunday will bring us <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewordonthestreet.ca\/\">Word On The Street<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And this year <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewordonthestreet.ca\/halifax.php\">Halifax&#8217;s Word On The Street<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewordonthestreet.ca\/halifax.php#Cartoonists\">a large comics component<\/a> in addition to the usual celebration of bookery. <a href=\"http:\/\/homepage.mac.com\/strangeadventures\/word.jpg\">All the locals and a whole pile of Toronto types<\/a> are going to be here for the show<footnote>Weirdly absent is Mike Holmes, who has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=153\">a book currently solicited<\/a>, and who I expected to see there<\/footnote>. The list is impressive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alphona, Adrian&#8211;He did the art on Marvel&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Runaways_%28comics%29\">Runaways<\/a> series.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gobukan.blogspot.com\/\">Bone, J.<\/a>&#8211;He&#8217;s done lots of stuff. Most interesting to me was probably <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=6\">Alison<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=128\">Dare<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottchantler.com\/\">Chantler, Scott<\/a>&#8211;I think I have his complete works here. I&#8217;m really enjoying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=125\">Northwest<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=132\">Passage<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/chodrawings.blogspot.com\/\">Cho, Michael<\/a>&#8211;I admit to ignorance, but like the idea of a children&#8217;s book entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Media-Madness-Insiders-Guide\/dp\/1553371747\">Media Madness<\/a>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Darwyn_Cooke\">Cooke, Darwyn<\/a>&#8211;All I&#8217;ve read is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DC:_The_New_Frontier\">New Frontier<\/a>, but I quite liked that. I&#8217;ll probably be buying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Absolute-New-Frontier-Darwyn-Cooke\/dp\/1401210805\">the swank edition<\/a> when it comes out.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.inkskratch.com\/\">Kim, Eric<\/a>&#8211;I am quite enjoying <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=107\">Love<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=115\">As<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=123\">A<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=129\">Foreign<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=137\">Language<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuliptreepress.net\/sugar\/\">Kraatz, Rebecca<\/a>&#8211;I&#8217;ve been reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tuliptreepress.net\/sugar\/\">House Of Sugar<\/a> online.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hopelarson.com\/\">Larson, Hope<\/a>&#8211;She&#8217;s been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/index.php?s=hope+larson\">mentioned here before<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.superslackers.com\/\">Manale, Steve<\/a>&#8211;I claim ignorance<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/adept.wire-fu.com\/\">McLachlan, Brian<\/a>&#8211;I&#8217;ve got his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onipress.com\/graphicnovels\/gn.php?id=106\">No Dead Time<\/a> book here, and it was fun<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stevemcniven.com\/\">McNiven, Steve<\/a>&#8211;I haven&#8217;t really seen any of his stuff since he was doing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Meridian_%28comics%29\">Meridian<\/a> and the Holmes analogue at Crossgen, but he&#8217;s surely the most famous guy coming in the eyes of most comic fans, since he&#8217;s currently doing the art<footnote>&#8211;and taking the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_War_%28comics%29#Delays\">lateness blame<\/a>&#8212;<\/footnote> for Marvel&#8217;s big <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_War_%28comics%29\">Civil War <\/a>crossover thingy.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.qwantz.com\/\">North, Ryan<\/a>&#8211;Again, I plead ignorance, but apparently there are strips <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qwantz.com\/\">online<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iboxpublishing.com\/\">Oakley, Mark<\/a>&#8211;Probably the guy I&#8217;m most excited to meet; I&#8217;m a big fan of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iboxpublishing.com\/\">Thieves &#038; Kings<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.radiomaru.com\/\">O&#8217;Malley, Bryan Lee<\/a>&#8211;local indie comics genius, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/index.php?s=Malley\">mentioned here before<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seth_%28cartoonist%29\">Seth<\/a>&#8211;I met him last time he was out here, and got my copies of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Its-Good-Life-Dont-Weaken\/dp\/189659770X\">It&#8217;s A Good Life, If You Don&#8217;t Weaken<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Bannock-Beans-Black-Tea-Depression\/dp\/1896597785\">Bannock, Beans and Black Tea<\/a> signed. This time I want to get something sketched into my copy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Wimbledon-Green-Greatest-Collector-World\/dp\/1896597939\">Wimbledon Green<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;ll definitely be checking it out. I&#8217;ve got piles of books to get signed. <\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s lots more than just the comics stuff going on&#8211;I have at least two custom bookbinders to talk to.
