I avoided typing it in by finding a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peakdesign.com\/peak\/ram\/polsong.htm\">copy already on the web<\/a> along with a reading of the poem in it&#8217;s original tongue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Song on the End of the World<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the day the world ends<br \/>\nA bee circles a clover,<br \/>\nA Fisherman mends a glimmering net.<br \/>\nHappy porpoises jump in the sea,<br \/>\nBy the rainspout young sparrows are playing<br \/>\nAnd the snake is gold-skinned as it it should always be.<\/p>\n<p>On the day the world ends<br \/>\nWomen walk through fields under their umbrellas<br \/>\nA drunkard grows sleepy at the edge of a lawn,<br \/>\nVegetable peddlers shout in the street<br \/>\nAnd a yellow-sailed boat comes nearer the island,<br \/>\nThe voice of a violin lasts in the air<br \/>\nAnd leads into a starry night.<\/p>\n<p>And those who expected lightning and thunder<br \/>\nAre disappointed.<br \/>\nAnd those who expected signs and archangels&#8217; trumps<br \/>\nDo not believe it is happening now.<br \/>\nAs long as the sun and the moon are above,<br \/>\nAs long as the bumblebee visits a rose<br \/>\nAs long as rosy infants are born<br \/>\nNo one believes it is happening now.<\/p>\n<p>Only a white-haired old man, who would be a prophet,<br \/>\nYet is not a prophet, for he&#8217;s much too busy,<br \/>\nRepeats while he binds his tomatoes:<br \/>\nNo other end of the world there will be,<br \/>\nNo other end of the world there will be.<br \/>\n    <em>Warsaw, 1944 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I ran into the Czeslaw Milosz (that&#8217;s &#8220;Nobel Laureate Miolsz&#8221; to you) poem below, in one of this month&#8217;s magazines.
