{"id":528,"date":"2006-05-02T10:02:21","date_gmt":"2006-05-02T14:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/05\/02\/for-all-intensive-purposes\/"},"modified":"2006-05-02T10:02:21","modified_gmt":"2006-05-02T14:02:21","slug":"for-all-intensive-purposes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2006\/05\/02\/for-all-intensive-purposes\/","title":{"rendered":"For All Intensive Purposes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought my little brother was the only person who thought the expression &#8220;for all intents and purposes&#8221; was actually &#8220;for all intensive purposes&#8221;, but it appears not.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teresa_Nielsen_Hayden\">TNH<\/a>, in a post that follows on nicely from the Guardian article I linked to yesterday, has <a href=\"http:\/\/nielsenhayden.com\/makinglight\/archives\/007425.html\">a giant list of such mistakes<\/a>, in what is clearly an attempt to make my head explode. Her original short list has grown exponentially with contributions from the comments. An example:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nreign in one&#8217;s enthusiasm<br \/>\ntreat this client with kit gloves<br \/>\nbaited breath<br \/>\npealing paint<br \/>\non the lamb<br \/>\nspeak my peace<br \/>\nshe balled her eyes out<br \/>\nthe succession to the thrown<br \/>\ntwo sense worth\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>One of my personal favourite peeves would be &#8220;do to&#8221; where someone really means &#8220;due to&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>One of these that annoys me a lot because it is so plausible is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.grammartips.homestead.com\/toetheline.html\">tow the line<\/a>&#8221; where someone really means &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwidewords.org\/qa\/qa-toe2.htm\">toe the line<\/a>&#8220;. Wikipedia actually has <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toe_the_line\">an entry<\/a> on this one, and it&#8217;s also kind of fun to look at their <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_idioms_in_the_English_language\">list of idioms in English<\/a>&#8211;many of which are on TNH&#8217;s list in some mangled form.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I thought my little brother was the only person who thought the expression &#8220;for all intents and purposes&#8221; was actually &#8220;for all intensive purposes&#8221;, but it appears not.
