One of them is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poppyzbrite.com\/\">Poppy Z. Brite<\/a>, onetime wunderkind of the flash horror set, but lately the author of some really excellent New Orleans food porn novels. I really didn&#8217;t have much use for her early horror works, but both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?tag=homosum-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/redirect.html%253fASIN=1400050073%2526tag=homosum-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=\/o\/ASIN\/1400050073%25253FSubscriptionId=1D7RNC9A4DZJNRAARVG2\" title=\"View product details at Amazon\">Liquor<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?tag=homosum-20%26link_code=xm2%26camp=2025%26creative=165953%26path=http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/gp\/redirect.html%253fASIN=1400050081%2526tag=homosum-20%2526lcode=xm2%2526cID=2025%2526ccmID=165953%2526location=\/o\/ASIN\/1400050081%25253FSubscriptionId=1D7RNC9A4DZJNRAARVG2\" title=\"View product details at Amazon\">Prime<\/a> were excellent, both at portraying &#8220;the life&#8221; and at capturing the weird relationship between chefs and food. Also, both books made me very hungry at points.<\/p>\n<p>Reading her journal (she was\/is a New Orleans resident) in the aftermath of Katrina has been very interesting.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I saw this snippet in <a href=\"http:\/\/docbrite.livejournal.com\/348752.html\">her journal<\/a> today, describing her reaction to seeing Krewe de Vieux on parade:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The macabre, slightly bitter edge to this year&#8217;s parade &#8212; hazmat suits decorated with sequined penises, little people drowning and writing HELP on their roofs while Mayor Nagin lies in bed masturbating &#8212; made me as proud of New Orleans as anything that&#8217;s happened since our return. Nothing destroys us so thoroughly that we can&#8217;t make fun of it, and Mardi Gras is a greater force of nature than any hurricane.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I quite like that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I follow the online journals of a lot of authors.
