A couple of times on the weekend I contemplated writing something about the proposed coalition<\/a>. I’m kind of glad I didn’t, since things have moved at a much more rapid pace than I would have guessed possible. <\/p>\n

And besides, as usual, Patrick sums it up<\/a> better than I could have. (As a bonus, the bit about Americans laughing derisively at the idea of someone being interested in Canadian politics is quite revealing about how America got to be the way it is.)<\/p>\n

I do love the idea of Broadbent and Chretien hatching this scheme over lunch, and then just rolling it out–it kind of highlights the relative effectiveness of the current leaders of their respective parties. It’s nice that someone, at last, recognised that Harper was going to continue his game of “you won’t force an election” chicken, just as he did in the last minority, and found a solution that doesn’t involve another election. The fact that it is a solution that recognises that more than 2\/3 of Canadians are well left of Harper is a plus. The less said about Harper’s hypocrisy<\/a>, the better.<\/p>\n

It shouldn’t have been Dion, though. That’s going to be a problem. <\/p>\n

My real prediction today: a lot more Canadians will know the meaning of the word “prorogue” by the end of this week than knew it last week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
