{"id":1545,"date":"2008-09-11T09:48:12","date_gmt":"2008-09-11T13:48:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/?p=1545"},"modified":"2008-09-11T09:52:42","modified_gmt":"2008-09-11T13:52:42","slug":"the-research-mindset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/11\/the-research-mindset\/","title":{"rendered":"The research mindset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am so jealous of all the people working at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ted.com\/index.php\/talks\/brian_cox_on_cern_s_supercollider.html\">the LHC<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p>However, the best thing I&#8217;ve seen that&#8217;s LHC related this week was Hawking talking about <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ted.com\/2008\/09\/hawking_makes_1.php\">his $100 bet against the project finding the Higgs boson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Why do I think it&#8217;s the best thing?<\/p>\n<p>Well, look at this part of his comments:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I think it will be much more exciting if we don&#8217;t find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the essence of a good theoretical scientist: not just knowing it&#8217;s possible that your theory might be disproved, but actually hoping that you get to go &#8220;back to the drawing board&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I am so jealous of all the people working at the LHC this week.
