I read the drepessing statistic today that only 58% of people across Canada will support the notion of evolution. Actually, it’s 58% more or less consistently across Canada, except in Alberta, our little bit of Jesusland here in the heart of Canada, where the number is 38%. (Note: it’s not an accident that our current minority government of Bush\/Cheney style neoconservatives is based in, and draws substantial support from, Alberta.)<\/p>\n
Here’s some of the report<\/a>:<\/p>\n Overall, 58 per cent of Canadians say they are believers in evolution. By region, the numbers are more or less in keeping with the national average.<\/p>\n However, there’s one notable exception in this poll: Alberta.<\/p>\n A shockingly low 37 per cent of Albertans supported the position that humans beings evolved from less advanced life forms over millions of years. An even greater number of Albertans — 40 percent — agreed that humans were created by God within the last 10,000 years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The 58% is depressing enough to me, without thinking about Alberta. Who are the 42% the don’t buy evolution, and how is it that my life never intersects with theirs. Is this something like Schroeder<\/a>‘s Lady of Mazes<\/a> where our world views are just so disparate that we can’t even acknowledge each other’s existence? Or ar they just not in any of the orbits that I move in and vice versa?<\/p>\n Even more depressing, the article reveals the existence of a “creation museum<\/a>” in Canada. Sigh.
