{"id":1263,"date":"2008-06-11T23:10:17","date_gmt":"2008-06-12T03:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/?p=1263"},"modified":"2008-06-11T23:10:17","modified_gmt":"2008-06-12T03:10:17","slug":"tomorrow-is-conservatives-sell-us-to-us-companies-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2008\/06\/11\/tomorrow-is-conservatives-sell-us-to-us-companies-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomorrow is &#8220;Conservatives sell us to US companies&#8221; day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I know you&#8217;re tired of it, but I&#8217;m going to mention the Canadian DMCA again, since it&#8217;s been announced various places that Prentice will be tabling it tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialpost.com\/story.html?id=580564\">some coverage at the National Post<\/a>, which while using neutral language manages to present the legislation as something harmful to consumers:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The new Copyright Act has been updated to reflect the growth of digital media and is said to include a number of contentious provisions including:<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; A $500 fine for each illegal file shared online<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Making it illegal to unlock cellphones or copy music from protected CDs to iPods<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Forbidding the right to copy &#8220;time shifted&#8221; shows onto personal video recorders if flagged by broadcasters.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think that second bullet will wake up anyone who reads that article.<\/p>\n<p>Of course I favour a much less neutral approach. Like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2008\/06\/11\/canadian-industry-mi-1.html\">Cory<\/a>&#8216;s:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Here it is, folks, at long last: Industry Canada Minister Jim Prentice is about to introduce his Canadian version of America&#8217;s disastrous Digital Millennium Copyright Act tomorrow.
