For cynical Good Friday stuff, hit the search bar and look for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/?s=%22Good+Friday%22\">&#8220;Good Friday&#8221;<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/?s=Eostre\">&#8220;Eostre&#8221;<\/a>, and you can read last year&#8217;s stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The other thing keeping me busy was an upgrade to &#8220;the lab&#8221;, also known as &#8220;my office&#8221;, or &#8220;the library&#8221; depending on how I feel.<\/p>\n<p>I have moved from a 100Mbps network inside the lab, with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wireless_G\">wireless G<\/a> throughout the house (including a pain-in-the-ass wireless repeater) to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gigabit_Ethernet\">gigabit ethernet<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wireless_N\">wireless N<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wireless_N#Status\">almost<\/a>) throughout the house.<\/p>\n<p>This should mean that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Communications between my two terabye RAID arrays and my latest computer&#8211;which are the only three things currently with gigabit networking support&#8211;should be much faster. Let&#8217;s not say &#8220;ten times faster&#8221; since that&#8217;s usually a lie, but still much faster.<\/li>\n<li>Wireless communication between my latest laptop (the only one with Wireless N support) and the router should be much, much faster.<\/li>\n<li>Wireless communication between my latest laptop (the only one with Wireless N support) and the router should have a much greater ranger.<\/li>\n<li>Theoretically all the wireless-G (Linux laptop, Trish&#8217;s machine, Wii, media server, etc.) devices should also have a greater range, although this will need testing. The new router sure seems to have smaller gain antenna (and not replaceable ones either: boo!). If this is true, I can get rid of that pain-in-the-ass repeater.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Still to do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rearrange device placement to optimize cable runs. I.e. undo some of the spaghetti.<\/li>\n<li>Clean up the office\/lab\/library\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geekculture.com\/geeklove\/sphere2.html\">nerdhole<\/a>\/whatever<\/li>\n<li>Find a place for the second printer<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/2006\/09\/20\/some-really-deep-geekery\/\">Install DD-WRT<\/a> or something similar on the new router, without breaking anything.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">No normal blogging today, since I was mostly busy with family stuff.
