{"id":1035,"date":"2007-11-20T00:23:05","date_gmt":"2007-11-20T04:23:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/20\/maybe-theres-a-reason-we-associate-wisdom-with-age\/"},"modified":"2007-11-27T00:48:15","modified_gmt":"2007-11-27T04:48:15","slug":"maybe-theres-a-reason-we-associate-wisdom-with-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.chrismclaren.com\/blog\/2007\/11\/20\/maybe-theres-a-reason-we-associate-wisdom-with-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Maybe There&#8217;s A Reason We Associate Wisdom With Age"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m leaving the title off of this until the end&#8211;read it first.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Doctor, you say there are no haloes<br \/>\naround the streetlights in Paris<br \/>\nand what I see is an aberration<br \/>\ncaused by old age, an affliction<br \/>\nI tell you it has taken me all my life<br \/>\nto arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angels,<br \/>\nto soften and blur and finally banish<br \/>\nthe edges you regret I don&#8217;t see,<br \/>\nto learn that the line I called the horizon<br \/>\ndoes not exist and sky and water,<br \/>\nso long apart, are the same state of being.<br \/>\nFifty-four years before I could see<br \/>\nRouen cathedral is built<br \/>\nof parallel shafts of sun,<br \/>\nand now you want to restore<br \/>\nmy youthful errors: fixed<br \/>\nnotions of top and bottom,<br \/>\nthe illusion of three-dimensional space,<br \/>\nwisteria separate<br \/>\nfrom the bridge it covers.<br \/>\nWhat can I say to convince you<br \/>\nthe Houses of Parliament dissolves<br \/>\nnight after night to become<br \/>\nthe fluid dream of the Thames?<br \/>\nI will not return to a universe<br \/>\nof objects that don&#8217;t know each other,<br \/>\nas if islands were not the lost children<br \/>\nof one great continent. The world<br \/>\nis flux, and light becomes what it touches,<br \/>\nbecomes water, lilies on water,<br \/>\nabove and below water,<br \/>\nbecomes lilac and mauve and yellow<br \/>\nand white and cerulean lamps,<br \/>\nsmall fists passing sunlight<br \/>\nso quickly to one another<br \/>\nthat it would take long, streaming hair<br \/>\ninside my brush to catch it.<br \/>\nTo paint the speed of light!<br \/>\nOur weighted shapes, these verticals,<br \/>\nburn to mix with air<br \/>\nand change our bones, skin, clothes<br \/>\nto gases. Doctor,<br \/>\nif only you could see<br \/>\nhow heaven pulls earth into its arms<br \/>\nand how infinitely the heart expands<br \/>\nto claim this world, blue vapor without end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"align:right\">&#8211;Lisa Mueller<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The title of the poem is (swipe to read): <font style=\"color:white\"><strong>Monet Refuses The Operation<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the second time a Lisa Mueller poem has almost knocked me over by turning out, on closer inspection. to be very different than my first experience of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I&#8217;m leaving the title off of this until the end&#8211;read it first.
