Damn, that&#8217;s a lot of my blather.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate my millenipost, I present some of my favourite Latin poetry. This piece is commonly referred to by the highly creative and poetic name &#8220;Catallus 5&#8221;, since it&#8217;s the fifth of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poetry_of_Catullus\">surviving works<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catullus\">Catallus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Vivamus, mea Lesbia, atque amemus,<br \/>\nrumoresque senum severiorum<br \/>\nomnes unius aestimemus assis!<br \/>\nsoles occidere et redire possunt;<br \/>\nnobis, cum semel occidit brevis lux,<br \/>\nnox est perpetua una dormienda.<br \/>\nda mi basia mille, deinde centum,<br \/>\ndein mille altera, dein secunda centum,<br \/>\ndeinde usque altera mille, deinde centum;<br \/>\ndein, cum milia multa fecerimus,<br \/>\nconturbabimus, illa ne sciamus,<br \/>\naut ne quis malus invidere possit<br \/>\ncum tantum sciat esse basiorum.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No, I don&#8217;t expect any of you (except Allison, if she sees this between retsina parties) to be able to read that. You all know how to use Google, though, so you can find translations. I&#8217;ll spare you those two clicks though&#8211;here&#8217;s a rough attempt to capture the &#8220;feel&#8221; in a modern idiom:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Let us live, Lesbia, and let us love \u2014<br \/>\nignore the small-minded talk of old people!<br \/>\nThe sun rises and sets and rises again,<br \/>\nbut we live only once; after the brief sunshine<br \/>\nof our lives, a night of eternal sleep will claim us.<br \/>\nGive me a thousand kisses, and then a hundred,<br \/>\nthen another thousand and a second hundred,<br \/>\nthen thousands more kisses until we&#8217;ve lost count;<br \/>\nwe should not keep track, neither we nor any<br \/>\nevil-minded person who might envy us our kisses.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p class=\"excerpt\">I am shocked to discover that the previous post was number one thousand.
