Though it was a German publisher, Heyne and it happened in three of Powers's novels that we published over there in the late 80s. And I think the adverts were for soup! You can actually see the advertisments in question on this excellent <a href="http://www.timpowers.de/Extras_Kurios.htm" rel="nofollow">German Powers site</a>! Is it absolutely true!
