Keeping Track of Veronica Mars, S2
So, you’re wondering why I’m such a fan of Veronica Mars? I could go into the fabulous writing and acting, the excellent mystery plot, the way each episode of the first season was a subtle homage to certain mystery tropes, etc. However, instead of doing that I will just continue to recommend–as I have been doing for two seasons now–that you just watch the show and decide for yourself. Everyone I’ve made this challenge to, who has actually tried the show, has become a serious fan (with the exception of Neil A. MacFarlane, Esq., who, as we all know, has seriously misaligned life priorities.)
After such a good season 1, I was quite worried that Season 2 would be terrible, especially when I heard that the network had a lot of “notes”. Well, everything that I liked last season seems to be taken up a notch this season, especially the plotting. (And it seems like the notes must have just been “lets have more sex on the show”, since the number of gratuitous sex scenes / references has taken a huge spike from last year–but that’s actually not so bad if it’s the limit of the network meddling.)
The rest of this post is an attempt to summarize the current open questions in the season’s background arc. Bear in mind that this is like 8 episodes into the season, and that most of this stuff is subtext, and in the few cases where it’s explicit, it’s in the B-story. Each episode also has the “wrapped in an hour” A-plot as well.
This list is shamelessly lifted from a list prepared by Dan Evans III, who is one of my pop cultural gurus.
Veronica:
- May be the target of a huge murder conspiracy.
- because she brought down the big real estate consortium?
- because she is the target of revenge by Aaron Echolls?
- complete coincidence?
- Investigating the guilt of Logan
- still has blackmail tape of Sheriff Lamb?
Meg
- In a coma
- in coma because she was on the bus?
- why did she survive?
- What is in the letter?
- What is on her computer?
- Why is her family so freaky? Witness Protection? Mob ties? Scientologists?
Duncan
- Has a previously unknown connection with Meg
- Did he knock her up?
- Is he still on his meds or is he beating hoboes?
- Is it possible that he killed Lily like Aaron is now claiming?
- Did he bone Kendall? Did he give her money? Something else?
Logan
- Connected to murder on the bridge
- Sets off Neptune Class War
- Sets off gang war between PCHers and Fighting Flannigans
- Did he do it?
- Why are the Fighting Flanigans involved in the murder?
- Was he just a good fall guy for Mayor Guttenberg’s plan to create Gated community?
- Do we really believe it was a coincidence that Aaron was at the jail at the same time as Logan?
Wallace
- Why is the dad back?
Weevil
- Is he losing control of the PCHers?
- Is he being set up by his own boys?
The S2 Mysteries, in General
- The Bus
- Why did the stunt guy blow up the bus?
- Was the seperation of students intentional?
- Does beaver know more than he is letting on?
- What Blew up?
- WTF is up with the GD RAT???
- Why is he dead, with VM’ s name on his hand
- Abel Coontz’ Daughter
- OK Seriously? WTF?

- She was happy in Europe, then she bolted? Or was she abducted with a cover story?
- A diplomat killed her and stuffed her into an Ice machine???
- WHAT DOES SHE KNOW???
- Meg’s family
- Is sis covering for Meg or herself or for something else?
- Seriously, how f’ed up is that family?
- Tessa and her dad
- What’s up with the psychic?
- Why did she leave NY?
- Is her drug use (addiction) tied into The Irish Methheads?
- What did her dad do to get blackmailed by Lamb?
- Evil Mayor Gutenberg
- How does real estate deal tie into evil Mayor Gutenberg’s plan for a rich super community?
- Why does the mayor want Keith so bad? To keep enemies closer….becuase he likes Keith….or hates Lamb?

Two things — Isn’t it the Fighting Fitzpatricks? (Or is the Flannigans thing an Irish joke I’m missing?) (Oh wait, and is Tessa, Jackie?)
And on the Veronica tip, I think it’s also been implied that she could have been the target of retaliation by the Fitzpatricks against her dad (best dad ever!), but that could just be too unlikely to not deserve a spot on the list.

It’s a joke–the six Flannigan children do battle.
And Jackie is played by Tessa Thompson, Q.E.D.

Ah, got it.

Does the huge murder conspiracy mentioned involve the bus crash? Because Veronica didn’t bust the real estate fraud until after the bus crash. So is someone now saying two different groups are trying to murder her?

I think it’s pretty strongly implied that Terrence Cooke gambled on baseball, which as I understand it is a big no-no for baseball players in that it can bring up allegations of game-fixing. He may end up in trouble with whatever authorities regulate baseball, and possibly losing his job.
Are we certain that Curly Moran sabotaged the bus? That only seems to work if we actually think the crash was Aaron Echolls’ doing, and I really doubt that.
Oh, and what about the call that came from inside the house? Someone called Weevil to tell him that Felix was killed by the Fighting Fitzpatricks (which, right now, seems to make a great deal of sense). Veronica discovered that the call was made from Logan’s house on a night in which a party was held there. The 09ers, the PCHers, and Lamb all showed up at the party, but the number from which the call was placed wasn’t familiar to Veronica.

Re: Gambling on Baseball - it’s not just a big no-no - it’s close to the biggest no-no since the Blacksox scandal - see the treatment of Pete Rose as the model for this storyline. (Proof of gambling on baseball warrants an automatic banning from baseball for life)
What I want to know is:Who was the rat a message to?
I think Cordelia didn’t sleep with Duncan - rather she sold him some drugs, which I think is part of the source of his ongoing blanditude (other than his terrible acting)
